April 1 – FIFA has confirmed that British-based camera-based company Hawk-Eye will provide goal-line technology for the Women’s World Cup in Canada in June – the first time the system has been employed for the tournament.
Hawk-Eye, which has long been used in several other sports, lost out to the German company GoalControl at the men’s World Cup in Brazil and the latest decision comes after a tender process announced in December.
Hawk-Eye claims its system is millimetre-accurate and indicates whether or not a goal has been scored within one second by a vibration and visual signal on the referee’s watch.
It is already used in the Premier League as was previously employed by FIFA at the Club World Cup in Japan in 2012 after which football’s world governing body switched to the rival GoalControl system.
