VW to provide electric self-drive vans for Qatar 2022 World Cup

December 20 – Volkswagen is targeting the 2022 World Cup to showcase its self-driving electric vehicles. The German carmaker has been working with the city of Doha, Qatar to provide a fleet I.D. Buzz autonomous vehicles for the start of the world finals.

VW said tests of the vehicles will begin next year with trials scheduled to start in 2021. VW is working with local officials to implement the physical and digital infrastructure to ensure the vehicles operate as intended.

The service is expected to launch in Doha before November 2022.

VW said it will build 35 I.D. Buzz minivans that will seat four passengers, taking them on ‘semi-fixed’ routes through the city. Scania will build 10 high-tech buses that will shuttle larger groups.

VW is neither a FIFA sponsor or a local sponsor for the 2022 World Cup.
