July 21 – The AFC and the local organiser for the Women’s Asian Cup in India next year have unveiled the tournament logo for the finals that will take place January 20 to February 6.
The India-hosted finals marks a significant expansion of the tournament to 12 teams, four more than each of the last four editions, and will see the introduction of a quarter final stage for the first time.
The logo is based on the original cup design first used at the Jordan tournament in 2018, but with some local Indian influence incorporated.
The maroon in the logo takes inspiration from the Warli artworks – a tribal art form mostly preserved by the tribal people from the Northern Sahyadri Ranges in India and in the host state of Maharashtra, where the hue of red and maroon often forms the base of the paintings.
Similarly, the silver in the logo is a testimony to the importance of silver jewellery in Indian households and the beauty and elegance of the precious metal.
The India 2022 Women’s Asian Cup marks a big step forward for the women’s game in Asia with qualifying rounds still to take with a record number of 28 nations going into the draw held at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur last month.
Defending champions Japan, 2018 runners-up Australia and third-placed China PR, as well as hosts India, have already qualified for the Finals.
The 28 teams were drawn into four groups of four and four groups of three. Only the winners of each group will qualify for India 2022.
Five Asian teams from the India 2022 event will qualify for the newly expanded 32-team FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia/New Zealand 2023. Australia have already pre-qualified as hosts. There will also be a further two inter-continental play-off places available.
