Swiss football violence forces league to consider banning away fans

October 29 – Following several recent incidents, the Swiss Football League are reportedly discussing whether to ban away fans.

Scenes of violence marred the recent Zurich derby but fights have also taken place in Lucerne and Lausanne.

The SFL stressed in a statement that the vast majority of supporters are peaceful but indicated it was running out of patience and is examining the feasibility of closing away areas.

“It is with disappointment that we note that some groups of supporters … do not respect past agreements and laws,” said Claudius Schäfer, CEO of the Swiss Football League.

“The SFL and the clubs expect a clear signal from the fan groups that such actions are not supported and acceptable.”
