Angola officially opens stadiums for African Nations Cup

December 29 – Two of the four stadiums hosting the 2010 African Cup of Nations, due to open in less than two weeks, have been officially opened.

The 50,000-seater 11 de Novembro Stadium in Luanda was opened by President José Eduardo dos Santos while the 35,000-seater Ombaka Stadium was opened in Benguela by Prime minister Antonio Paulo Kassoma.

The 11 de Novembro stadium will host matches in Group A comprising Angola, Malawi, Algeria, Mali as well as the opening and final matches.

The infrastructure includes a football pitch, an athletics track, one lecture and anti-doping room, bars, restaurants, health posts and a police station.

The Ombaka Stadium will host matches of Group C comprising Egypt, Mozambique, Nigeria and Benin.

The other two stadiums hosting the tournament will be opened later today and tomorrow in the cities of Lubango in the south and Cabinda in the north.

The Government has reportedly spent more than $1 billion (£615 million) building the four new stadiums and on repairing infrastructure largely destroyed by 27 years of civil war which ended only in 2002.
