January 7 – Angola is ready to host the African Cup of Nations, which open on Sunday, the country’s Government has declared.
The Interministerial Monitoring Commission of the African Football Cup of Nations, which has met under Angola’s Prime Minister António Paulo Cassoma, claimed that everything was now in place for a successful tournament which is due to kick-off with a match between the hosts and Mali at the 11 de Novembro National Stadium.
Manuel Mariano, the spokesman for the Commission, said: ”The conclusion we’ve reached is that the machine is ready.”
A rehearsal for the opening ceremony has been held at the 11 de Novembro National Stadium and was watched by Angola’s President José Eduardo dos Santos.
The event includes a celebration of African tradition and its history and the natural resources of Angola, as well as the national reconstruction process.
Dos Santos also watched Angola’s team training.
Striker Love Cabungula said: ”It’s an honour to have the President here.
“This shows that the whole nation supports the national squad.
“Now we need to give back this affection with good games and wins.”
