July 8 – Former Football League chairman Brian Mawhinney (pictured) has been appointed as a special advisor by the international arm of the National Football League (NFL) as the sport looks to continue to establish its presence in Britain.
The former Conservative MP stood down from his role at the helm of the Football League in March, having spent seven years in the position.
Mawhinney retains a significant interest in football through his role as deputy chairman of England’s bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but will now additionally work with NFL International to offer guidance and counsel on the sporting landscape in order to aid American football’s UK development.
“As a long-time NFL fan it is an honour to be linked with NFL International in this way,” said Mawhinney.
“The sport is developing impressively in this country and I look forward to aiding that process.”
Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFL UK, added: “We are very pleased to be able to call upon someone with Lord Mawhinney’s background and knowledge.
“We plan to utilise his success in various fields to help us continue, and accelerate, the growth of our sport and our business in the UK.”
