January 21 – FIFA Executive Committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii have formally appealed against suspensions in the cash-for-votes row that marred the 2018 and 2022 World Cup ballots.
Nigeria’s Adamu was banned for three years after he was caught seeking bribes from undercover reporters.
Temarii, from Tahiti, was cleared of corruption but received a one-year ban for breaching confidentiality rules.
Both deny any wrongdoing and FIFA will hear their appeals from February 2-3 via their Independent Appeals Committee.
Temarii claimed to have received a letter from FIFA in which he was “cleared [of] all corruption allegations” but has since been replaced as head of his own Oceania confederation by David Chung, who also takes over Temarii’s FIFA vice-presidency.
Adamu could soon suffer a similar fate.
He must be exonerated to have any hope of standing for re-election at next month’s CAF Congress in Khartoum where two of Africa’s four delegates to the FIFA Executive Committee will be chosen.
