March 24 – Bulgaria and Romania have confirmed their intention to apply to jointly host the 2020 European Championships.

Borislav Mihailov (pictured), the former Bulgarian goalkeeper, announced the idea following his election to UEFA’s Executive Committee earlier this week.

“If we build a brand new national ground, and if we overhaul and renovate three others, together with our colleagues from Romania [within the Uefa Executive Committee], we could apply for the European Championship in 2020,” he said.

“Everything happens gradually, step by step.

“First, the under-17 and under-19 Championships.

“We have to fix the football grounds in Varna and Bourgas and meet the UEFA requirements.”

Mihailov is his country’s most capped player, and captained Bulgaria during the greatest period in its history when they reached the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup, and was one of seven candidates to win election to the UEFA Executive Committee this week.

He said that far from wanting to join forces with Hungary, neighbours Romania wanted to bid for the tournament alongside Bulgaria.
