April 9 – UEFA has announced that it has received in excess of 12 million ticket applications for the 2012 European Championships, to be held in Ukraine and Poland.
A total of 12,149,425 ticket applications have been made by fans to date, surpassing the record of 2008 when 10.4 million people applied for tickets to the European Championships which were held in Austria and Switzerland.
It means that with 550,000 tickets available, for every supporter who is successful, there will be 22 disappointed fans missing out.
There is a limit of four tickets per applicant.
A total of 88 per cent of applicants are from the host countries, with those trying to get hold of tickets coming from a total of 206 countries.
A lottery system will be used to determine those who have been successful between April 19 and 22, and ticket sales are set to generate €100 million (£88 million/$144 million) for UEFA.
