April 20 – Craig Whyte’s proposed takeover of Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers could be delayed again, as current club chairman Alastair Johnson wants talks to continue until the end of the season.
Whyte originally started talks to buy the debt ridden club last November, but since then a prospective deal has been delayed on several occasions.
It was hoped that he would finally complete the deal this month, after a meeting with Sir David Murray, the current shareholder.
The criteria for the takeover were laid out after agreement on a deal had been reached with Lloyds Bank, but the latest snag has frustrated Whyte’s team.
A source close to the businessman said: “Craig Whyte is in a position to close the deal immediately.
“Everything is ready to go but some members of the independent committee are dragging their heels and want to delay the takeover until the end of the season.”
Whyte has promised to give Ally McCoist, who will take over as the club’s manager at the start of next season from Walter Smith, significant funds to spend as part of the takeover, which is costed at approximately £33 million ($54 million).
