April 22 – Doha looks set to host a benefit game in December for the victims of last month’s devastating earthquake and tsunami which struck Japan.

World Cup winning Brazil captain Cafu suggested to Qatari officials that an all-star game between a side made up of ex-Brazil and Germany internationals could take on an all-star international XI.

Cafu revealed the plan after having met FIFA Presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam and the Qatari Football Association President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani.

The former right-back, Brazil’s most capped player of all time with 143 appearances, said: “We wanted to do something to help the people affected in Japan where we had a wonderful experience of winning the World Cup finals in 2002.

“I thought we should extended our helping hand.

“We are hoping to bring back some of the players from the 2002 final to feature in this game, and compete against a team of stars from all over the world.”

In the 2002 World Cup final Brazil beat Germany 2-0 with both goals from Ronaldo, who recently retired from the sport after a spell with Corinthians.

Cafu was the captain of that Brazil side, who lifted the trophy in Yokohoma, Japan.

Proceeds from the game would go to the victims of the March 11 disaster, which left 28,000 victims either missing or dead.

Qatari and Asian Football Confederation officials said that they are working on various projects designed to help the victims of the earthquake.

Cafu, who also won the World Cup in 1994, is expected to confirm plans for a special soccer academy to be set up in Qatar.
