April 29 – Football fans have been warned by Polish police to ensure that they buy tickets for the 2012 European Championships from reliable sources to avoid the risk of fraud.

“Many people want to watch the Euro 2012 matches and they are likely to be targeted by fraudsters,” said a spokesperson for Poland’s police chief Mariusz Sokolowski.

Just over half a million tickets have been sold by UEFA to supporters after the ballot closed earlier this month, following a record number of applicants for the tickets, priced between €30 (£27/$40) and €600 (£533/$890).

The remainder of tickets will be distributed among various federations, sponsors and corporate clients.

The competition being held next year is hosted by Poland and Ukraine, and starts on June 8.
