May 10 – The Football Association (FA) may cut funding to three African nations after a board meeting set for next week, which is to decide the budget and strategy for international development.
Following England’s failed 2018 World Cup bid, it is believed that Malawi, Lesotho and Botswana are under threat of seeing their aid from the FA reduced.
The FA made the decision to review their international strategy in the light of that failed World Cup bid, in which England won just one vote other than its own.
Walter Nyamilandu, the head of the Malawi FA, said that funding had already been cut: “They [England] are saying that they are reviewing their support towards development of football in the light of the poor support they received during the 2018 World Cup bid.
“According to the FA, they took the decision because they felt FIFA was not recognising the support they were giving to the game of football.
“Their services are greatly missed.”
England have sent the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville to Malawi in the past on behalf of the FA.
Former FA chairman Lord Triesman is set to give evidence later this month to MPs regarding England’s failure to land the right to host the World Cup.
