May 16 – The Institute of Economics and Transport Development in Russia has prepared a draft plan for the development of a rail network to transport fans and players across the country during the 2018 World Cup.
More than 100 trains would be part of the high speed network and run between all the cities hosting games during the tournament.
The plan is projected to exceed more than a trillion roubles (£21 billion/$34 billion).
An estimated half-a-million people will need to be transported during the tournament via rail, with night trains planned to help supporters get to cities which will be hundreds of miles apart.
Four different branches of the network are planned; one from Moscow to St. Petersburg, one from Moscow to Nizhny Novogrod and Kazan, and two from Moscow to Yekaterinburg in the east.
