June 8 – FIFA has confirmed that it has extended its World Cup sponsorship agreement with Chinese solar energy company Yingli Green Energy.

The solar energy company signed an agreement to sponsor the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, becoming the first renewable energy partner of FIFA’s flagship competition, and want to build on their success during that tournament in Brazil in 2014.

The announcement was made during the 2011 Intersolar trade fair in Munich, attended by FIFA’s marketing director Thierry Weil and Yingli’s chairman and chief executive, Liangsheng Miao.

The news is a boost to FIFA as well, coming a week after some of its sponsors had expressed concerns over the damage to the organisation’s image caused by their controversial Presidential election last week.

“We could not have organised the FIFA World Cup on the scale that we saw in 2010 without the support of sponsors such as Yingli Solar” said Weil.

“Yingli Solar’s activities have had a wide-reaching geographical impact, from raising the awareness of the FIFA World Cup in their home market China, to providing solar expertise and products in rural parts of Africa as part of the ‘Football for Hope’ programme.

“We view our agreement as a strategic long-term cooperation and I am delighted to welcome Yingli Solar on board as a committed sponsor of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.”

Liansheng Miao added: “After our 2010 FIFA World Cup sponsorship, we saw a tremendous increase in our brand awareness and enquiries for our products.

“We were also very happy to see how our products brought smiles to the children in need by supplying our solar solutions for FIFA’s Football for Hope programme.

“We are excited to once again join hands with FIFA, to build a greener FIFA World Cup and a more sustainable future with affordable clean energy provided by the sun.”
