June 8 – UEFA has given its backing to the 2012 European Championship preparations just a day after Poland’s Supreme Audit Office raised doubts over the country’s transport infrastructure.
The tournament is being jointly hosted by Poland and Ukraine and UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said: “It is impressive what is going on in Ukraine.
“There are many milestones but we are now on the final straight and have achieved much in Poland and Ukraine.
“The road was not an easy ride – the project was at a high risk [of cancellation] due to delays to facilities.
“Our doubts have now been wiped out; we are going in the right direction at the right pace.”
Hryhoriy Surkis, the president of the Football Federation of Ukraine, added: “Eighteen months ago we felt it was seriously threatened, today no one doubts it, we are on the final lap.”
Just yesterday Poland’s Supreme Audit Office had said: “Euro 2012 preparations have visibly advanced, but the scale of delays, abandoned projects and poorly implemented investments is so significant that it may threaten the smooth running of the tournament.
“NIK states that modernising the road infrastructure has suffered the most serious negligence.”
Despite the concerns the Polish Prime Minister insisted that the country would be ready on time for the tournament, taking place from June 8 to July 1.
