June 14 – South Korea is extending a period of plea-bargaining to enable more players guilty of match fixing to come forward in exchange for reduced punishments.

Ten players have been caught by South Korean authorities in their match fixing probe, and they want to encourage as many players as possible to come forward and admit their guilt before they close what was initially a two week window for them to do so.

Sports Toto, a state run betting agent, has been forced to stop taking bets at the request of the K-League, following the embarrassing scandal.

Jeong Jong-kwan, a 29-year-old midfielder, was last month found dead in a hotel room with a suicide note which made reference to being involved in match fixing.

A spokesperson for the K-League said: “The deadline was set for today, but team representatives have agreed to extend it.

“We promised to keep all related information confidential, so we can’t say how many players have approached us.

“It’s still inadequate, but it’s progress.”
