September 1 – North American Asian sports network One World Sports (OWS) has agreed a multi-platform rights deal in the region for a number of football matches from the third stage of qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, to be held in Brazil.
The rights were secured exclusively with Asian sports marketing agency World Sport Group (WSG), and OWS will broadcast both live and delayed matches from qualifying.
The first games include China versus Singapore, Australia versus Thailand and Syria versus Uzbekistan, which take place this week.
Broadcasts are in English, and it follows on from the organisation’s successful airing of the Asian Cup earlier this year, which was held in Qatar, as well as the Asian Champions League.
OWS is available on the DISH network and local cable, and its chief operating officer Preston Bornman said: “The Asian qualifying matches are a fantastic addition to our live and exclusive multi-screen sports rights.
“The qualification matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup showcase soccer on a global basis, and we are proud to offer these games halfway around the globe.
Mark Hardess, President of the ASEAN and Australia regions for WSG, added: “World Sport Group and One World Sports are working closely to introduce US soccer fans to the excitement and quality of Asian soccer which is growing steadily in North America.
“One World Sports provides the ideal platform to deliver the very best soccer from Asia to fans in the US”
As well as football, OWS is the first English language multi-platform Asian focused sports network in the US to show a range of other sporting events from the region, including golf, tennis and badminton.
