September 26 – The winner of this season’s Confederation of African Football Orange Champions League will take home $1.4 million (£900,000/€1 million), with the Confederations Cup champions taking just under half that figure.
The decision was made during the meeting of the Organising Committee for inter-clubs competitions in Cairo, chaired by CAF President Issa Hayatou.
There are also significant financial incentives for the runners up and semi finalists of the Champions League, as well as for the federations of the teams that reach the last four.
TP Mazembe of Congo will be hoping to retain their trophy and take home the cash prize when this season’s competition gets underway.
They will also be hoping to build on their success at last year’s World Club Cup, where they shocked Brazilian outfit Internacional in the semi-finals, when this year’s competition takes place in December as the African representative.
Mazembe could face Copa Libertadores holders Santos or European champions Barcelona at the tournament, being held in Toyota and Yokohama in Japan.
FUS Rabat of Morocco are the holders of the Confederations Cup, and will face TP Mazembe in the African Super Cup, hoping to avenge defeat to the same team in this year’s final, where they lost on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
