October 26 – FIFA President Sepp Blatter has written to the Turkish President, Dr Abdullah Gül, to express his sympathy for the country, after it was hit by an earthquake earlier this week, in which at least 461 people lost their lives.
Blatter told Turkey: “Our thoughts and sympathy are with you all at this time of sadness.”
More than 2,000 buildings have been destroyed and countless people injured after the quake struck near the eastern city of Van on Sunday (October 23).
“On behalf of the entire football family, we wish to express our profound sadness at the news of the violent earthquake,” Blatter wrote.
“In the name of the international football community, we would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to the people of Turkey, particularly the families of the victims.”
