November 29 – UEFA President Michel Platini has said that preparations for the 2016 European Championships, which will take place in France, “are going well.”
Platini met with Prime Minister François Fillon and told him that he was pleased with the progress being made.
A number of new stadiums are either being built or renovated for the tournament, which will be the first European Championships to involve 24 teams.
Lille will begin next season in the 50,000 Grand Stade Lille Métropole, one of the venues for 2016, and Lyon are also building a new ground – the Stade des Lumières.
Bordeaux are also building a new ground and Marseille’s Stade Velodrome is one of a number undergoing renovations.
Platini told the Associated Press: “All is going well, we have had good contacts with the state and things are progressing.”
He added that “it must make a nice change” for Fillon to have “someone in his office saying that everything was going well.”
