December 14 – Not for the first time, European Club Association (ECA) boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (pictured) has had a dig at FIFA President Sepp Blatter, this time describing him as being like a slippery “eel” at the head of a “dictatorship”.
“I believe Sepp is like an eel, who you can never really grasp,” the Bayern Munich chief said on German television, suggesting Blatter will take some convincing to stand aside at the head of football’s world governing body when his current term expires.
“I find it a pity that there are such relics left which are led like a dictatorship.”
Rummenigge, who has been waging a constant club-v-country battle with FIFA, believes the organisation is “neither transparent nor democratic” despite Blatter’s recent pledge to clean up the game and his new two-year reform plan.
Last June, Blatter was unopposed for a fourth term when his rival Mohamed Bin Hammam, President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), pulled out after being suspended over bribery allegations.
But Rummenigge said: “It will be difficult to convince him to make room.”
