January 11 – Damien Hughes has been appointed acting general secretary of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) by the Steering Committee attempting to restore the credibility of the entire region.

Hughes has been the general secretary of the Anguilla Football Association for the last 10 years and fills the position left vacant when Angenie Kanhai resigned last month.

Jeff Webb, chairman of the Normalisation Committee put in place to run the affairs of the CFU following the shake-up in its administration, said Hughes will serve as the CFU’s chief administrator pending the results of the CFU’s congress in May.

“[He will] maintain the communication lines between the CFU and its members, and to prepare the union for its ordinary congress set for May 2012,” said Webb in a letter to CFU members.

“As you will imagine, the success of Mr Hughes’ tenure will be dependent upon our ability to partner with him as he seeks to assist us in returning the union to some level of administrative normality.”

The nine-member Normalisation Committee was appointed in December by the 30 Caribbean football federation Presidents as the first step towards restructuring the body following the tumultuous scandal-rocked events of the past 12 months.

The CFU has been without a President since Jack Warner resigned last June after becoming embroiled in the cash-for-votes scandal surrounding the FIFA Presidential candidacy of Mohamed Bin Hammam, banned for life pending appeal.

The FIFA Ethics Committee probe also led to sanctions against several key CFU members.
