January 18 – CSKA Moscow general director Roman Babaev (pictured) has been ordered to pay one rouble in compensation after telling Spartak Moscow forward Welliton to “walk the streets with care” after a game between the sides last year.
Babaev made the comments to the Brazilian after a game last August in which Welliton injured CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.
Welliton was banned for three matches for the incident, which saw the Russian international goalkeeper, one of the country’s best players, ruled out of action since.
Simonovsky District Court ruled that he had defamed the character of the Brazilian, and was ordered to pay the compensation as a token gesture.
Upon arrival in Russia in 2007, Welliton (pictured) was racially abused by his own supporters, and though he has since won them over with his displays on the pitch, his coach Valery Karpin had claimed that Babaev’s comments were an incitement to violence.
On their website, Spartak issued a statement which read: “The Simonovsky District Court has fully satisfied the claims of the Spartak forward Welliton for compensating the pain and suffering over the slanderous comments levelled at him by CSKA general director Roman Babaev.”
