February 2 – Tottenham Hotspur executive director Charlie Wijeratna, hired little more than a year ago from London 2012 with a brief to bring in fresh sponsorship, has left the club.
Reports said Wijeratna, who joined the London club in November 2010 on a three-year contract after being recommended by Sir Keith Mills, the chief executive of London 2012 during its successful bid, who is now the deputy chairman and a director at Tottenham.
Wijeratna was hired from London 2012, where he was director of commercial negotiations, to revamp Tottenham’s brand awareness in Asia but had failed to forge any significant agreements.
Tottenham have appointed headhunters to find a new head of sponsorship and a commercial director.
Tottenham are currently third in the English Premier League and are keen to exploit the prospect of Champions League football next season.
They are also pressing ahead with plans for a new 56,000-seater stadium adjacent to their current ground having last year abandoned the option of moving to the Olympic stadium in Stratford after the London 2012 Games.
Wijeratna, who left on January 17, said he was “proud” of the work he had done at Spurs.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said: “I’d like to thank Charlie for his work since he’s been with us.
“He has overseen the successful overhaul of the brand and the Club’s visual identity.
“We wish him the best of luck in the future.”
