February 9 – South Sudan is set to become a provisional member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as they continue their journey on the way to becoming a member of FIFA.
Following a bloody civil war that saw approximately two million people lose their lives, South Sudan broke away from Sudan and declared independence last July.
They became a member of the United Nations shortly after the split.
CAF last September pledged to support its bid for membership of world football’s governing body.
The CAF Executive Committee meeting tomorrow in Libreville, Gabon, one of the venues of the African Nations Cup currently underway, will formally consider South Sudan’s application to become the continent’s 54th member.
South Sudan’s bid for FIFA membership was submitted in September, and they should be able to begin playing competitive internationals in 2014 if that bid is successful.
