February 11 – The entire Ajax Supervisory Board have offered to resign to bring to an end the civil war between those supportive of, and those opposed to, the plans of club legend Johan Cruyff (pictured), which continues to paralyse the Dutch champions.
The three time Ballon d’Or winner is part of the five-man supervisory board which has offered its resignation after his fellow Board members lost a court battle earlier this week to appoint Louis van Gaal, a long time rival of Cruyff, as a director.
This was against Cruyff’s wishes and an Amsterdam court ruled that the supervisory board had excluded him from the decision making process.
Shareholders were due to meet to discuss the problem but the solution appears to have already been reached subject to the appointment of replacements.
On the Ajax website, a statement said: “[The Supervisory Board] has announced that they are prepared to resign.
“This would take place in the short-term as soon as successors who could rely on overall support can be named.”
The announcement brings to an end a short but tempestuous spell since last July when Cruyff, Steven ten Have, Edgar Davids, Marjan Olfers and Paul Romer were appointed to the board.
Cruyff brought in a number of former players to overhaul the coaching structure at the club, a move that was opposed by the rest of the supervisory board.
