February 13 – MasterCard has extended its sponsorship of the UEFA Champions League, the premier competition for European football clubs, until 2015.

No price for the renewal was disclosed.

The payments company is a longstanding sponsor of the competition.

David Taylor, chief executive of UEFA Events, said the European football governing body was “very pleased” to continue its relationship with MasterCard, whose active involvement had contributed to the “great success” of the competition – and would do so for the next three seasons.

Javier Perez, President of MasterCard Europe, said the company was “delighted” at the renewal.

“Last season alone saw bank and merchant promotions in over 60 countries,” he added.

“This announcement ensures we can continue to reward existing and potential customers in new and innovative ways.”

MasterCard is promising to place “renewed focus on the fans”, through cardholder offers and “priceless” experiences.

In the last two years, parents have been able to watch their children accompany players onto the pitch or win access for them to special pre-match practices.
