February 24 – Two more footballing icons have joined the star-studded FIFA panel set up to try and make the game more of a spectacle.
Former Ghana skipper Abedi Pele (pictured) and ex-Romanian playmaker Gheorghe Hagi have become members of the FIFA Task Force Football 2014 in order to beef up the body’s global representation.
FIFA is understood to have come under considerable pressure to add Pele to the 22-man grouping, established by Sepp Blatter following the 2010 World Cup, after originally leaving the three-time African Footballer of the Year off the list.
Both new members joined this week’s third meeting of the Task Force in Zurich but deputy chairman Pelé was once again conspicuous by his absence, the Brazilian legend citing other commitments but hardly adding to the credibility of panel.
