July 6 – A disappointing period for David Beckham has continued after he was banned by Major League Soccer (MLS) for one match after provoking a brawl during a league game.
Beckham (pictured above) was omitted surprisingly from Britain’s 18-man squad for this summer’s Olympic Games in London.
Playing back in the United States for his club, Los Angeles Galaxy, he struck Sam Cronin of San Jose with the ball during his team’s 4-3 defeat last weekend.
He also kicked a second ball in the direction of referee Hilario Grajeda.
Beckham was once famously on the end of a boot fired in his direction by his coach at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson.
The former Real Madrid star’s act provoked a prolonged dispute between the two sides, and he was given a yellow card for his troubles.
He already missed the MLS champions’ home defeat to Philadelphia on Wednesday (July 4) as a result, and will now be suspended for this weekend’s clash with Chicago.
Beckham has also been fined an undisclosed sum.
Despite winning the MLS last year, LA Galaxy are struggling this time around and are currently sixth out of nine in the Western Conference.
Galaxy need to finish in the top three to advance to the MLS playoffs.
