July 8 – The new President of CONCACAF, Jeffrey Webb, is remaining coy over details of a possible joint tournament with CONMEBOL in 2016 that would pit together North and South America.
Webb (pictured) met South American football officials earlier this month to discuss the idea of joint competition featuring both confederations.
The meeting with the Executive Committee of CONMEBOL, South America’s federation, took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Webb said: “I look forward to further talks and building a stronger relationship between our confederations.
“We are working through various agreements and all agree not to comment until these are finalised.”
CONCACAF, which represents North and Central America and the Caribbean, holds its Gold Cup championship in odd-numbered years.
Since 1999, South America’s Copa America has been held every four years in the summer following a FIFA World Cup; there have been two outside invitees, mostly from CONCACAF, since 1993.
A partnership with CONCACAF in 2016 would celebrate the 100th anniversary of CONMEBOL.
