July 11 – Yet another Middle East venture is investing in English football with the news that Nottingham Forest has been taken over by Kuwait’s Al-Hasawi family.
Fawaz, Abdulaziz and Omar Al-Hasawi have agreed to acquire the controlling stake of Nigel Doughty, who died in February four months after putting the former two-time European champions up for sale.
“We know there are challenging times ahead of us to bring the club back to its glory days,” the Al-Hasawis said in a statement.
“We look forward with excitement towards a new successful future.”
Forest, which won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980, dropped out of the Premier League in 1999 and finished 19th in the Championship last May.
The Al-Hasawi family reportedly made their fortune in refrigeration and air-conditioning and are determined to bring back the glory days to Forest.
“Over the next few weeks we will be working closely with our players, on-field and off-field team members in preparation for the forthcoming season,” the statement said.
