August 23 – Brazil 2014 has announced that it has opened the recruitment process for the FIFA World Cup volunteer programme.
FIFA is looking for thousands to take part in its programme and volunteer at the Confederations Cup next summer and the World Cup in 2014.
The programme is open to both Brazilians and non-nationals, but volunteers must be 18 years old three months prior to the start of the chosen event.
Candidates can choose whether to work on the draws for either tournament or during the actual competitions themselves.
The selection process will be conducted simultaneously for all four events, with 22,000 volunteers needed to help with accreditation, transportation, press operations and hospitality among other areas.
Brazil 2014, along with the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, is hoping to strengthen the volunteer movement in the country.
“The atmosphere of joy and celebration of the FIFA World Cup comes from volunteers,” said Brazil 2014’s executive director of operations, Richard Trade.
“Until yesterday, [we were] a small team of about a hundred employees.
“Starting today we will be thousands, united by the same goal.
Rodrigo Hermida, the manager of the volunteer programme, added: “It will be a competitive process, and we rely on the dedication and commitment of all the volunteers for the FIFA World Cup.
Legendary forward Ronaldo, a 1994 and 2002 World Cup winner (pictured above, right, scoring at the 2002 World Cup Final) and member of the Brazil 2014 board, said: “It’s time to embrace the Brazilian population FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
“I saw first hand that the success of this event depends on the involvement of the population, who gives a ‘face’ to every single FIFA World Cup.”
