September 27 – FIFA may have been rocked by scandal over the past 18 months but the organisation’s Goal programme, set up 13 years ago to assist developing nations, has reached a new milestone.
According to the latest figures by the FIFA Development Committee, 600 Goal projects in 199 member associations have been implemented, representing a total investment of $250 million (£154 million/€194 million).
Africa has been the main beneficiary of funds with 166 projects, followed by Asia with 147.
South Sudan, FIFA’s 209th and newest member association, is set to become one of the latest recipients with a $500,000 (£308,000/€388,000) project aimed at building the headquarters of the country’s Football Association and a playing surface in Juba.
