September 30 – The new Perform centre at St George’s Park, which will be used by the England national team as its training base, has opened to the public.

Perform (pictured top) includes an expert exercise, medicine, human performance and rehabilitation centre, located at St George’s Park, the new national centre for coaching developed by the Football Association (FA) at a cost of £100 million ($162 million/€126 million).

The centre will be crucial to the preparation of the England team in the years to come and, although it is designed for elite athletes, it is made available to anyone.

Among the facilities available is an anti-gravity treadmill incorporating NASA technology to aid rehabilitation from injury.

There is an altitude centre, allowing athletes, clients and explorers to train at different altitudes to help recover from injury, as well as boosting general health and weight loss.

There is also an under water treadmill and hydrotherapy suite (pictured below), and biomechanical assessments utilising video movement analysis.

David Sheepshanks, the chairman of St George’s Park, said: “Perform at St George’s Park combines elite medical expertise with the latest cutting-edge technologies with the aim of enabling anyone to perform at their very best.

“The centre will be home to the England medical teams and I have no doubt that it will help England football teams of all age groups maximise their performance, both on and off the pitch.

“I look forward to Perform becoming an internationally renowned centre of excellence and a hub for sports performance experts, innovation and thought leadership.”

The centre is hoping to attract a range of people to the venue, with 40 per cent of the British public living within two hours of the centre.

Perform’s business director Ruth Paulin said: “Perform at St George’s Park can offer a complete service to any visitor, with state-of-the-art facilities all available under one roof.

“Whilst the centre is designed with elite athletes in mind, any client can have access to our elite level sports physicians, therapists, trainers, sports scientists and of course, our advanced exercise equipment, allowing us to create a specialised, personalised programme to help everyone maximise performance or recover from injury or surgery.”
