December 28 – After months of vicious in-fighting, Real Mallorca president Jaume Cladera has chosen to resign with immediate effect.
Fellow shareholders Utz Claasen and Biel Cerdà had requested his position be considered during the next shareholders
meeting on January 29.
At a press conference at the club Cladera stated, “There comes a time when the right thing is to find the best solution for the club. I understand that right now the best thing for the club is my resignation.”
Cladera pointed out that during his time with the club, since late September 2010, he didn’t take any form of pay and that under his watch the club had gone from havin debts of €78 million and an operating loss of €16.6 million the previous year to posting profits of €7.2 million and €2.9 million.
Cladera took over when the previous president, Josep Pons, was sacked after accusations, which were later found to have no substance, of sexual harassment in his earlier role as a diplomat.
The club, which sits just above the relegation zone in La Liga, has been riven by conflicts between shareholders which have included billionaire German Utz Claasen, supported by Pedro Terrasa, having accused Llorenc Serra Ferrer and Cladera of fraud by inflating the price of shares.
