April 9 – Cameroon are the latest country to fall foul of FIFA’s strict rules on government interference in football.
FIFA general-secretary Jerome Valcke has written to the Cameroon federation over the decision by the country’s sports minister Adoum Garoua to pry into the electoral process of the country’s football authorities.
Garoua wants “broad-based consultations” but in a letter dated April 4, Valcke, in a veiled threat, warned that any stalling of the election process in the regional leagues by administrative authorities would constitute a breach of FIFA regulations.
Exactly who brought the ongoing situation to FIFA’s attention is an interesting question since the Cameroon FA Secretary General Tombi Roko denies allegations that the complaint came from his federation.
