May 6 – The cash-strapped Polish league has agreed a record breaking new title sponsorship for its top division with telecommunications company T-Mobile.
The deal is an extension of an existing title sponsorship contract but is a significant uplift for clubs who have struggled with player wages and fulfilling their commitments.
The new sponsorship will guarantee each of the 16 top tier Polish clubs PLN1m each season of the two year deal.
The previous deal with title sponsor Orange – who were acquired by T-Mobile half way through the sponsorship – paid clubs PLN31.6m (€7.6m) over 3.5 years – a total of PLN9m per season season (€2.17m).
The league will continue to be called the T-Mobile Ekstraklasa.
The league has also landed an increased TV deal. The contract with Canal+ will see the broadcaster spend more than PLN200m (€48 mln) over the next two seasons.
