May 7 – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) general assembly accepted Iran’s Football Federation’s (IFF) request to lift a ban on development projects for Iranian football teams.
According to a report by the Iranian Student News Agency, the AFC budget for Iran’s football teams had been frozen, after pressure from western countries, following the embargos against Iran. The new move now makes it possible for Iran to access AFC’s financial aid.
The AFC members accepted Iran’s request after the new Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa discussed Iran’s call for lifting the embargo at the general assembly meeting.
Washington and its Western allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes only.
