May 9 – Sporting Clube de Portugal President Bruno de Carvalho has struck out at players agents and representatives after newspapers published reports regarding his team’s squad.
De Carvalho has criticised agents for breaching a confidentiality agreement during negotiations. “We cannot condone the climate of speculation and attempts at manipulation via stories that have been made public in these last few days about Sporting Clube de Portugal,” he said.
He blames “businessmen and sport agents” as “they want to promote their players and managers. We know that some stories that filter to the press are promoted by them.” According to the President “their aim is to manipulate opinions and emotions of Sporting supporters […] all to gain commercial advantages which can harm the interests of Sporting Clube de Portugal”.
He said that the club hasn’t aired any information “about signings, renewals or exits” and when “appropriate, information will be given via Sporting’s official channels of communication”.
“All future business will have something essential: that they abide by our policies and fully safeguard the best interests of Sporting Clube de Portugal.” Sporting is struggling financially and will need to sell players during the summer transfer window.
De Carvalho made it clear that the club will suspend negotiations with any representatives who breach confidentiality agreements and that this will harm any future business with Sporting.
“Only players that show respect, pride and loyalty will stay or by signed by Sporting Clube de Portugal,” he said.
