May 15 – Arsenal are expected to receive a windfall of around £3million after Barcelona were officially revealed as the new champions of Spain.
The deals which saw former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas move to the Camp Nou in 2011 and midfielder Alex Song, who made the same move a year later, included clauses requiring bonus payments once the pair won their first La Liga championship.
Despite neither player being regarded as an overwhelming success in Catalonia, the pair, who moved for a total of £45 million to Spain from London, have earned Arsene Wenger’s side £3million in extra payments.
Fabregas, 26, is believed to have a clause in his contract entitling Arsenal to about £2million while Song’s contract states his extra payment must stretch to at least £1million.
Further to this, Arsenal are expected to receive £500,000 in payments from Hull City. This is because of a clause in Jay Simpson’s contract stipulating if Hull were to earn promotion to the Premier League, then the London club would receive a windfall through Simpson’s contract.
The 24-year-old, who only made three appearances for Arsenal after graduating through the club’s youth system, moved to the KC Stadium in 2010 following loan spells at Millwall, West Bromwich Albion and Queens Park Rangers.
The financial boost is well timed for Arsene Wenger who is expected to be given a transfer cash pot of around £70 million to spend this summer, whether or not Arsenal qualify for next season’s Champions League.
