May 29 – The roof failure during heavy rain on Monday at the Fonte Nova Arena was down to “human error” according to a statement by engineering director José Luis Goes, of the Fonte Nova Participacoes (FNP) group, which manages the stadium.
According to the statement, “The breakup of a part of the 36 panels of the roof membrane was (caused) by human error. The FNP checked the sealing cover the previous day, taking advantage of the non-operation of the Games stadium. “
“During this procedure a portion of the membrane covering the metal deck was bent, which eventually became a barrier, causing an accumulation of rain water which prevented the correct outlets for drainage.”
According to the FNP, the incident was caused by a procedural error during the checking process, and is not connected to any structural problem.
Repairs to the structure will, according to the FNP, not jeopardise the deadlines for any future events.
The newly built stadium will host three matches of the Confederations Cup, including the games between Nigeria and Uruguay June 20 and between Italy and Brazil on the June 22.
