June 7 – Zamalek have written to the Egyptian FA, encouraging them to file a complaint to FIFA in a bid to bring pressure to overturn new regulations imposed by sports minister El-Amri Farouq. Zamalek maintain the new rules constitute unacceptable government interference in the sport.
Farouq unveiled new regulations for clubs and federations last month, imposing age restrictions on club and federation board members, and restricting board members to two four-year terms.
Ironically, FIFA, as part of its reform process, controversially failed to press for age and term of office restrictions for top officials at its congress in Mauritius.
Zamalek’s vice-president Sabri Serag told the club’s official website “We sent an official complaint to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) in order to transmit it to FIFA, citing government interference and the trespassing of the minister of sports on our rights.”
Al Ahly and Zamalek, the dominant clubs in Egypt, are united in opposition to the new rules and both seem willing to risk the country being banned from international competition in their dispute with the Sports Ministry.
