Turks get the all-clear from FIFA after doping re-assessments

Doping control

August 6 – FIFA have been quick to allay fears of a drugs problem in Turkish football following the announcement by the Turkish Athletics Association that 31 athletes have been banned for two years for doping violations.

FIFA explained in a statement that it had taken “the unprecedented decision to proactively check if football was also affected” by contacting the Turkish FA which had agreed to reassess the samples taken over the past year.

In total, more than 600 samples were reassessed and the initial findings showed not one single suspicious result.

“FIFA is very satisfied about those findings. We took the decision to investigate further because of the very alarming reports in the media. But the outcome is clear, there are no signs of systematic doping in Turkish football”, said FIFA’s Chief Medical officer Jiří Dvořák.
