August 26 – AC Milan midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng, known as much for his famous walk-off in January that led to a spate of new anti-racism measures as for his exploits on the pitch, has decided to come out of international retirement and play again for Ghana.
“I have decided to change my decision and confirm my availability to play for the Black Stars whenever I am needed,” Boateng wrote in a letter to the Ghana Football Association and could be available against Zambia in a crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier on September 6. Ghana need only a draw to advance to the final round of Africa’s World Cup play-offs.
Boateng was born and raised in Germany but opted to play for Ghana and switched his international allegiance in time for the 2010 World Cup. He went on to play a major part in Ghana’s run to the quarter-finals in South Africa but has won only nine caps.
In November 2011, he wrote to his federation saying he no longer wanted to play international football, claiming the physical demands of playing for both club and country were taking a toll on his career.
