September 12 – Jordan are the latest team to stake a surprise claim for a first ever place in next year’s World Cup in Brazil after winning a dramatic penalty shootout in their Asian play-off in Uzbekistan.
Both legs ended in a 1-1 draws, only for Jordan to scrape through 9-8 on penalties to earn an unlikely winner-takes-all showdown against the fifth-placed side from South America in November for a place in the finals.
Asian Confederation President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa sent a message of congratulations to Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, his fellow member of the FIFA executive committee and head of the Jordanian FA.
“I would like to congratulate the Jordanian team and all the stakeholders of football in Jordan and hope that they will win the crucial intercontinental playoff and be the fifth Asian representatives in Brazil,” Shaikh Salman said.
