October 14 – The Namibia Premier League (NPL) has agreed a new, more lucrative sponsorship deal with its long-time partner, telecoms operator MTC. The new deal will generate almost $2 million per season for the next three seasons giving a major boost to top flight football in the country.
At the signing ceremony in Windhoek, MTC Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer Tim Ekandjo said: “Supporting sporting talent ensures a brighter future for upcoming athletes. At MTC we understand the impact that sport can have on people and our sponsorship portfolio reflects this diversity,”
Johnny “JJD” Doeseb, the flamboyant mining and business mogul took charge of the NPL in 2009 expressed his gratitude for the generous financial injection from MTC.
“We will do everything possible in our power to ensure that we market the brand of MTC far and wide in all corners of the country, while ensuring that MTC enjoys the much-needed return for its unselfish investment, knowing that this road we have embarked upon will be a long and winding journey towards greater excellence for football development.”‘
The 2013/2014 league campaign kicks off on October 19 with Namibian football pundits confident about the quality of football being played in the top flight and that clubs are financially stable.
The league is generally dominated by the top sides including African Stars, Orlando Pirates, Rundu Chiefs and Black Africa.
