October 15 – One week ago Andros Townsend was on the receiving end of 3-0 home defeat to West Ham. A week later, Townsend is being hailed as a national hero after his heroic performance for England against Montenegro last Friday. Many are hoping that despite rumours of Townsend picking up a knock late on in the game mentioned above, that he can be a pivotal figure in sending England to the World Cup in their final qualifying match against Poland tonight.
Credit on the field can often result in a rise in reputation off the field as well. Although many would have been familiar with Townsend’s credentials from watching him playing in the Premier League, many wouldn’t have seen him on the World stage until now.
This enhanced reputation resulted in Townsend gaining 11,000 Twitter followers in 24 hours after his man of the match performance on Friday, moving from 97,000 followers to 108,000 in 24 hours.
Not quite the same upsurge as Paul Gascoigne’s arrival last week (250,000 in 24 hours) but none-the-less Townsend was trending on Twitter and was inundated with mentions on the social networking site.
Fittingly enough, Gascoigne’s new arrival on Twitter also resulted in the former England star following a potential new one as Gascoigne extended his following to 40 people – the last person being that of Andros Townsend! Enhanced performances on the pitch result in enhanced performances off it.
