December 2 – FIFA has extended its media platform with the launch of its first app in five languages – English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. The world’s governing body predicts the app will download over 70 million copies in the first few months, making it the world’s most downloaded sports application.
Free to download and available on iPhone, iPad and Android smartphones and tablets today, the launch coincides with the Final Draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.
The draw will be covered live in the app on December 6, but not streamed due to television rights being owned by FIFA partner broadcasters. The app will have exclusive comment from coaches as the groups and games are announced.
The app’s data is drawn from FIFA.com which during tournament months can receive more than 7 billion page views and 150 million unique visitors.
The core of the app is the World Match Centre which pulls in live data and match coverage from more than 200 leagues and competitions worldwide, and its general football news section. This also forms the core of the FIFA.com website alongside data like the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking of national men’s and women’s teams.
New to the app will be a FIFA Explore section, described as a “a series of interactive journeys to enable fans to get insights into FIFA initiatives that support the development of the game and FIFA’s mission to use football to build a better future.”
The app has links to through Facebook, Twitter and the FIFA.com Club allowing fans to get into the conversation and comment. It is available for download today.
